How to Help Your Baby Learn How to Walk

Is your baby walking along furniture but hesitant to step out on their own? Here is how to help them build balance and leg strength safely.
Once babies learn to pull themselves up to stand and walk while holding onto furniture, the next step is building the balance needed to walk independently. Supporting them at the right height and giving them simple practice opportunities will help them gain confidence.
Grab The Milestone Troubleshooting Guide, a free quick-reference toolkit I designed as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Inside, you’ll get targeted checklists to spot hidden tightness, strength gaps, or asymmetry, plus simple exercises you can start doing in your living room today to unlock their next movement!

Why Overhead Hand-Holding Isn't Ideal:
Pulls their center of gravity forward and forces them onto their toes.
Prevents their core, hips, and ankles from doing the actual balance work.
Practical Ways to Encourage Walking:
Hold their hands down at or below chest level if you are helping them walk so they support their own weight.
Set two sturdy pieces of furniture a few inches apart so your baby practices stepping across the gap from one to the other.
Put toys on the floor right at their feet while they are standing against a couch so reaching down and standing back up builds leg strength.
Let your baby walk barefoot on floor surfaces indoors so the muscles in their feet can grip the ground and build balance naturally.
