Why Your Baby Hates Tummy Time (And How to Fix It Today)
Updated: 3 days ago

If putting your baby on their stomach leads to immediate tears, you are far from alone. Tummy time isn't just about building head control, it sets the foundation for rolling, crawling, and posture.
Grab The Milestone Troubleshooting Guide, a free quick-reference toolkit I designed as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Inside, you’ll get targeted checklists to spot hidden tightness, strength gaps, or asymmetry, plus simple exercises you can start doing in your living room today to unlock their next movement!

Tummy time is essential for motor development, but it is also one of the most common things infants struggle with. When a baby cries on their stomach, it is usually because lifting a heavy head against gravity requires a lot of effort from weak neck and back muscles.
Why Tummy Time Matters:
Takes pressure off the back of the skull to prevent flat spots.
Exercises the core, back, and shoulder muscles needed for rolling, sitting, and reaching.
Gives your baby a new view of the room and helps them get used to feeling weight on their chest and hands.
Practical Tips to Help Your Baby:
Recline on a couch or bed and place your baby on your chest so looking at your face gives them a reason to try lifting their head.
Place a small rolled-up hand towel under their armpits to elevate their chest slightly and take weight off their neck.
Aim for 2 to 3 minutes at a time, 4 to 5 times a day, rather than pushing through a long, tearful session.
