Why Does My Baby Hate Tummy Time? 5 PT Tips to Stop the Tears

1. Check Their Tummy Time Posture
Positioning is absolutely everything. If your baby’s elbows are tucked too far back behind their shoulders, or if their pelvis is tilted incorrectly, lifting that heavy head becomes nearly impossible. Making sure their elbows are tucked right under their shoulders gives them a stable base to push up from.
2. Ease Body Tension First
Babies can experience tightness in their neck, shoulders, and spine (often from their position in utero or birth). Forcing a tight baby onto their belly is like asking an adult with a stiff back to do a backbend. Gentle, targeted pre-tummy time stretches can unlock the mobility they need to get comfortable.
3. Use Your Hands to Give Just Enough Support
When a baby’s neck muscles fatigue, they give up and face-plant. By using specific, hands-on PT handling techniques, you can give your baby a subtle touch of support under their chest or hips, helping them sustain the position without hitting exhaustion.
4. Fix the "Persistent Lean"
Does your baby always tip or roll to one specific side? Achieving midline alignment—where your baby is centered and balanced—is a crucial milestone. Tipping over frustrates babies quickly, so helping them find their center is key to building endurance.
5. Pivot Instead of Giving Up
Endurance is built on positive repetition, not exhaustion. If your baby starts to fuss, you don't have to quit floor play for the day—you just need to pivot! Try switching to an exercise ball for a change of gravity, or use strategic, propped breaks.
