Why Tummy Time Matters: More Than Just Neck Strength

1. It Prevents Postural Asymmetry

It is incredibly common for young babies to lean, tilt, or tip to one side during floor play. Tummy time allows parents and PTs to spot these minor asymmetries early. Facilitating midline alignment—helping your baby find their true center—ensures balanced, equal muscle development on both sides of the body.

2. It Activates the Extended Arm Transition

As your baby gets stronger, they transition from propping on their elbows to pushing all the way up onto extended, straight arms. This action opens up their palms, stretches their fingers, and stabilizes their shoulders—the exact physical preparation needed for reaching, grasping, and eventually crawling.

3. It Teaches Vital Weight Shifting

When your baby lies on their stomach and reaches for a toy, they have to shift their entire body weight onto one side. This intentional weight shifting is a complex motor skill that unlocks independent rolling and total-body coordination.

4. It Builds the Path to Independent Play

The ultimate goal of floor play is autonomy. By physically supporting your baby using proper pediatric handling techniques today, you are giving them the structural stability to play completely independently tomorrow.
